Navigating Life Transitions: A 7-Step Guide

Life is full of transitions, both big and small. Starting a new job or school year, moving to a new city, or saying hello or goodbye to a loved one can be challenging and overwhelming. Oftentimes, when we go through a significant life transition, old patterns, fears, and poor coping techniques resurface. For example, a person in recovery might relapse when it was once easy to resist that drink. Similarly, when sleep and food rhythms were once healthy and supportive, suddenly staying up late and overindulging on fried food and ice cream feels like the best option. In times like these, we often forget to use the newer, healthier coping skills we've been cultivating. Here is a list of healthy actions to guide you through a life transition and help you find your way to growth and new beginnings. Print these out and hang them on your fridge!

  • Embrace the Unknown

  • Seek Support

  • Practice Self-Love

  • Set Realistic Expectations

  • Embrace Change

  • Practice Mindfulness

  • Celebrate Your Progress

1. Embrace the Unknown: Transitions often bring uncertainty, and it's natural to feel anxious or fearful. Instead of resisting the unknown, try leaning into it. Be curious and look for opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Every transition has a gift. Can you find yours?

2. Seek Support: Going through a transition alone can feel so isolating. However, this is a time to reach out to trusted friends, family, or a mental health professional for support. More than any other time in life, this is the time to surround yourself with a network of people who can provide wisdom, encouragement, and a listening ear. Remember, you don't have to navigate these transitions alone.

3. Practice Self-Love: During times of transition, it's important to prioritize yourself and your needs. You might even want to physically put self-care items on your calendar! Make time for yourself, engage in activities that bring you joy, and practice gentle self-compassion.

4. Set Realistic Expectations: Did you know you get a dopamine hit every time you cross something off your to-do list? In times of transition, overwhelm can hit like a ton of bricks. It's easy to put pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out. However, setting small, realistic goals and accomplishing them alleviates anxiety and gives you permission to take things one step at a time.

5. Embrace Change: Buddhist practices state that change is inevitable, and it is the resistance to it that causes suffering. Transitions are all about change, and change can be uncomfortable. Can you reframe the resistance and discover something evolving and growing in your life because of the shift?

6. Practice Mindfulness: This may sound like a cliché, but it truly works. Mindfulness is probably the most powerful tool you have for navigating life transitions. Try it right now! Drop into awareness of your body, take a breath, and see what is right now. Stay present in this moment, acknowledge your emotions, notice the sensations and sounds within and around you. See? I bet you feel a little bit calmer...

7. Celebrate Your Progress: For those of you who tend toward perfectionism, this one can feel challenging. Get out your journal anyway and write down something you are proud of. Notice the successes. Pay attention to the evolution and growth happening within you. Transitions can be challenging, and it's essential to celebrate your progress along the way.
